Wildlife Friendly

Help to create a patchwork that links urban areas to the countryside. Wildlife requires four basic things: food, water, shelter and places to breed. Gardens form at least five times the area of all nature reserves and national parks in the country. A wide variety of insects and other invertebrates, birds, mammals and amphibians can be found in gardens if they are provided with a suitable environment.

There is wildlife in every garden!

To encourage wildlife, whether you wish to encourage one particular group of wildlife or several, having the right plants and creating the right habitats will encourage wildlife to stop off in your garden. I specialise in creating habitats that encourage wildlife.

I can create habitats for:

Butterflies

I can provide somewhere for butterflies to lay their eggs and hibernate and then plants to provide Nectar from Spring to Autumn. This will encourage these well loved visitors to your garden. The right habitat will help them build up their reserves for winter.

Different species of butterfly are attracted to different types of plants. Creating sustainable environments for butterflies is complex and requires an understanding of their year round needs.

Bees

Bees are vital for pollination and by using the right plants I can encourage bees to visit your garden more frequently. There are more than 20 species of bee that visit gardens.

Birds

By providing a food source with the right type of plants I can encourage birds into your garden.
Different birds eat different things:

  • Insect eating birds—eat slugs, snails, aphids and insects
  • Omnivorous birds—exploit various foods as they become available
  • Seed eating birds— a wide variety of seeds
  • Fruit eating birds—fruit is a nutritious source of food when abundant

Trees shrubs and hedges are used for roosting and nesting.

Frogs, toads & newts

Garden ponds are becoming the main haven for frogs, toads and newts. You do not need a large pond; a small permanent area of water can be very important to many animals.

I can help with:

Garden ponds

Ponds are the biggest single contribution that can be made to increase the wildlife interest in a garden. Ponds can be as large or small as you choose, and can be integrated into your garden design.

Dragonflies

A pond provides the breeding place for dragonflies. Upright stems or leaves are necessary for emerging dragonfly and damselfly nymphs.

Insects, beetles & bugs

Relatively few of the many species of insects are garden pests, the rest are beneficial to the gardener.

Some are pollinating insects, or as predators or parasites of pest species. The majority feed on dead or living plant material without having any detrimental effect on your garden. A very welcome beetle into the garden is the ladybird.

Native plants

By including some native plants into planting schemes, especially those that are found in the locality, it is possible to encourage wildlife that is dependent on these plants. Planting native plants in a garden helps to link the garden and its wildlife to the wider countryside.

“I can’t help but feel that gardens are the most important part of a home. Nowhere else do you get the opportunity to bring together beautiful colours, textures, fragrances and wildlife in one space. Well-designed gardens and public spaces truly create atmosphere and a place where people want to be.” – Jayne Bennetto
